Making Law School Affordable: Scholarships to Apply to in March 2024
Scholarship deadlines are constantly approaching while new scholarship offerings are always emerging. It can be hard to keep track of things, but that’s what we are here for. There are many resources available to BIPOC and first-generation students that can reduce obstacles that may prevent them from going to law school. Here at Barrier Breakers®, Inc., we are determined to helping students on their path through law school without breaking the bank.
Many organizations are offering financial support to current and potential future law school students. Applying for as many of these organizational scholarships as possible gives you, as a student, more opportunities for money in your pocket. Here we have compiled a list of scholarships providing financial aid in March and April 2024.
The USLAW NETWORK Foundation Law School Diversity Scholarship will be awarded to eligible, diverse law students and those who demonstrate a genuine commitment to DEI and social justice in their communities, or within their academic career, and demonstrate financial need to achieve their academic and professional dreams. Students must be BIPOC, a U.S. citizen, and currently attending law school to qualify. Applicants are only required to submit a 500-word essay and transcript to be one of ten students awarded $5,000. The Citywide Law Scholarship is being offered to incoming and returning students to assist with the financial hardships of law school. Requirements are simple as a transcript and a 1-2 page essay must be submitted by March 1st. Students must be a U.S. citizen and a full-time law school or college student. Nelson Mullens’ Diversity Scholarship Program is being offered to 2L, BIPOC who are enrolled full-time in law school. This $10,000 scholarship is primarily designed to increase the number of diverse law students interested in summer and long-term employment with Nelson Mullins, the scholarship program fits squarely into the Firm’s commitment to inclusive excellence and robust diversity in all aspects of Firm life. The only requirements are that students include their transcript and write a 500-word essay. More than one student can recieve the award and a salaried summer associate position at one of the firm's 33 offices, but the deadline for applications is March 1st. The Arnold & Porter Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship is offered as part of the firm's commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The Arnold and Porter firm is offering scholarships to highly qualified first-year law students. 1L students must submit a current resume, an official law school transcript, and a personal statement that goes beyond their resume and describes their unique personal history. Each $10,000 scholarship is paid directly to the scholarship recipients law schools to defray the tuition costs for their second academic year. The application due date ends March 11th. The Diane and Stephen Uhl Essay Competition for Law School Students is the most easily appliable scholarship on this list. Requirements are simple: students are asked to answer the prompt, “If you could create a 28th Amendment what would it be?” in 1,500 words or less. Students must also currently be enrolled in law school to be eligible. The first-place essay prize is $4,000, second place is $3,000, and third place is $2,000. Essays will be blinded to avoid unintentional bias and a selection of FFRF attorneys will be on the review panel. The deadline to apply is March 15th. For more details and to apply, click here.
The Future Lawyers Scholarship is available to incoming and returning law students who are enrolled or enrolling in a law school, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, at least 17 years old, and a U.S. citizen. This scholarship offers $2,000 to one student who is in need of assistance. Application requirements include: proof of an unofficial academic transcript, proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university, a professional headshot, and contact information. Andrew Cores Family Law Group also ask each applicant to submit a video of 3 to 5 minutes in length answering a prompt. The Devadoss Law Firm Civil Rights Scholarship is available to current and aspiring law school students who appreciate the importance of civil rights in the workforce. This $1,000 scholarship is eligible to students who are U.S. citizens, enrolled or currently in law school, and at least 17 years of age. Application instructions state each student must show proof of enrollment, provide contact information, and submit either a video or a 1000-word or less essay answering the application prompt questions. This Dallas-based law firm’s scholarship deadline is April 5th. Find more details about the scholarship here.
